2 Timothy 2:14-16 KJV — Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.
[15] Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. [16] But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
There are four simple steps in understanding the text of scripture in its context. Beyond praying, here are four simple ways you can understand the text of scripture in context;
- Read the text: Select and read your text. Read to understand the words and how they are used in relation to other words.
- Read the pretext: You must read verses before the verse that is under consideration.
- Read the post text: Go ahead and read other verses after your selected text, to get a fuller picture of the verse.
- Frame a context: Allow the text to say what it wants to say. Get into the text to frame a context to fully understand the text.
