Don’t be fooled by sudden commitment, most narcissists will fool you with a rushed commitment and love bombing.
John 1:35-42 KJV — Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; [36] and looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! [37] And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
[38] Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? [39] He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
[40] One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. [41] He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. [42] And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.
Most inexperienced people get fooled by sudden commitment from people; usually because they are selfish and self conceited. The text we just read above shows how to test for true loyalty; you must find the motivation for the sudden switch.
Now I want you to follow the narrative very closely, John was standing with his disciples and he saw Jesus, the man he had always been preaching about. He (John) then turned to his disciples and said, this is the man I have been preaching about and suddenly, his disciples left him and started following Jesus Christ. This sounds like the typical case of someone deserting a man he or she has been with for years suddenly to pledge commitment to you. You need to be smart enough to know that there is some kind of motivation.
It is important to note John had been preaching about the Messiah; so it was expected that if his disciples found the one that their teacher had been preaching about, they will love and follow him; Jesus Christ was smart to know that people don’t always do things because they are following scripture. Most people switch camps to places they find convenience. So when the disciples of John switched camps, our Lord Jesus Christ asked them a simple question “what seeks you?” He asked what they were looking for…
The expected answer should have been that our pastor always taught us about the coming Messiah, and we have found you. But their answer gave them up. What they actually meant by, we want to see where you live is, we are tired of living in a wilderness, because John lived in the wilderness; so we will not follow another pastor who lives in the wilderness. We want to know where you live, before we decide to follow you. These disciples at the beginning wanted to switch camps but they wanted to be sure that the new place was more convenient.
Today’s Prayer
I pray for you that you will not be fooled. You will be guided by the Lord in the making of choices. You will ask the right question and step into the right destiny. Times have changed and we have lost dignity and a sense of values are humans. Be careful how you begin to think that it’s all about you. Mostly, it’s all about them. We all make sure choices. Some modify their motivation but others don’t. Stay blessed and stay true to genuine connections!
