2 Timothy 2:15-17 KJV — “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. [16] But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. [17] And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenæus and Philetus;”
A foolish question often involves topics like endless genealogies, contentious debates, and strife over the law. These are questions that challenge God’s true intentions behind His commands. Remember, God’s sole purpose in instructing us is His love for us.
I urge you to study the word of God for yourself directly from the Bible. Avoid engaging in foolish and unlearned questions because doing so will:
Derail and subvert your faith
Many who ask foolish and unlearned questions are not genuinely seeking truth. They are often ignorant and intellectually dishonest, aiming to make you doubt your beliefs. These individuals act as the devil’s advocates, arguing for the sake of argument, which can lead to confusion and misguidance. Remember, the ultimate fate of such debaters is spiritual ruin.
Gender strife
Answering foolish and unlearned questions leads to unnecessary conflict. 2 Timothy 2:23 says, “But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.” Such questions only provoke arguments and strife, drawing you into unproductive and divisive discussions. Avoid these distractions and stay focused on your spiritual journey.
Lead to an unprofitable and vain adventure
The scriptures clearly state that foolish questions are unprofitable and vain. Titus 3:9 advises, “But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.” Engaging in these debates wastes time and leads nowhere beneficial.
Increase ungodliness and spread like a canker
Foolish and profane talk not only increases ungodliness but also spreads corruption like a disease. These discussions can eat away at your faith and spiritual well-being, much like how Hymenaeus and Philetus led others astray with their harmful words.
May the Lord help you discern wisely and stay grounded in your faith. Focus on studying the Bible and applying its truths to your life.
Stay blessed.
