Building in the Face of Great Opposition

Today’s Reading : Nehemiah 4

When the enemies hear that you have arisen and making progress, they would be upset and devise weapons against you. But you are not of them that run into hiding, so when you hear that they are raging, it is time to step up your game and press on gallantly.

When Sanballat heard that the Jews were building the walls and that most of it had already been completed he was filled with wrath and mocked them. Mockery cannot stop the work, it should rather spur us on.

To rally and build even in the face of opposition:

1. Focus on the promises of God: 

If you give the enemy attention he will give you direction. Focus on God’s providence and your strength would be renewed. The conspiracy of the enemy should not scare you. You must put your faith in God steadfastly without shaking. If you give the enemy attention he would give you direction so focus on your purpose and put your faith in God.

2. Pray:

When the Jews head that their enemies had conspired against them, they made their prayer to God. We have prayed concerning coming seasons but you must still keep the spirit of prayer alive.

3. Structure:

This small Jewish community was organised. You cannot be disorderly when your enemies are close. Immediately, Nehemiah and his people learnt that the enemy had conspired against them, they began to organise themselves.

The watchmen kept watch, the trumpeters got the trumpets ready, the workmen carried a tool in one hand and a weapon in the other, the fighting men carried their weapons.

4. Instruction:

In Nehemiah’s day the people had clear instructions just like we also do as the Church of God today. For instance, the Bible says is any tempted, let him be patient; is any merry, let him sing; is any afflicted, let him pray; is any sick, let him call the elders; has any faulted, let him confess his sins (James 5:13-15)

You are not supposed to listen to anything else, except it is coming from the trumpeters, and Nehemiah for that matter.

5. Community & Commitment:

When the enemy is close, what you need is community. We cannot be independent when our enemy is close by.

Also, you are to focus and give yourself wholly to your business and just chase your goals. The Jews built and fought for one another.

In pray for you that you shall press on and be victorious over every opposition in the coming year in Jesus‘ name!
