[Proverbs 30:17 KJV] “The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it”.
One of the major cause of loss of vision and direction is to mock your father and despise to obey your mother. The Bible says “the eye that mocks at his father and despise to obey his mother shall be pluck out by the ravens of the valley and eaten by the young eagles”.
Father’s Day is not about teaching fathers on how to be good fathers; it is about teaching sons and daughters how to be great sons and daughters who are committed to preserving the legacy of their fathers. Your father may not be a great or an excellent father, but it is your duty to honour him, at least for what he has done.
The only commandment left for us is to honour our fathers. In Ephesians 6:1-2, apostle Paul did not mince words on what the commandment is. He instructed us to honour our fathers. Never mock at your father. Noah cursed Ham because Ham mocked at him.
You honour your father by
1. Honouring his instructions:
If you truly respect your father, you will keep his instruction. The Bible teaches that only fools despise their father’s instruction. Don’t despise your father’s instruction. Honour your fathers instruction and you shall prosper. It is foolishness to despise your father’s instruction.
[Proverbs 15:5 KJV] “A fool despiseth his father’s instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent”.
The Bible teaches us of how the Rechabites honoured their father and kept his word. Not even the word of a prophet in the inner chambers of the house of the Lord can make them disregard their father. Many die prematurely because they despise the instruction of their father.
[Jeremiah 35:1-10 KJV] “The word which came unto Jeremiah from the Lord in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, saying, [2] Go unto the house of the Rechabites, and speak unto them, and bring them into the house of the Lord, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink. [3] Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habaziniah, and his brethren, and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites; [4] And I brought them into the house of the Lord, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan, the son of Igdaliah, a man of God, which was by the chamber of the princes, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, the keeper of the door: [5] And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of wine, and cups, and I said unto them, Drink ye wine. [6] But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever: [7] Neither shall ye build house, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have any : but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers”.
[8] “Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters; [9] Nor to build houses for us to dwell in: neither have we vineyard, nor field, nor seed: [10] But we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us”.
2. Honouring your father’s bed:
[fusion_text]Reuben was cursed by his father Jacob because he couched on his father’s bed. You must honour and respect any woman that your father relates with, even his concubines.
[Leviticus 18:8 KJV] “The nakedness of thy father’s wife shalt thou not uncover: it is thy father’s nakedness”.
Israel revealed that Reuben will not excel because he went into his father’s bed and defiled it. Strictly speaking, Israel did not curse Reuben, he only revealed what will happen to him as a consequence of his action and attitude.
[Genesis 49:3-4 KJV] “Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power: [4] Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch”.
Ahitophel moved Absalom to mock his father David, by going into his father’s wives in public. It is a mockery.
3. Preserving His Inheritance:
You can help your father by honouring him, and preserving his inheritance. The daughters of Zelophehad besought the Lord concerning the inheritance and name of their father. They were committed to honour their father by preserving his name.
[Numbers 27:1-11 KJV] “Then came the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph: and these are the names of his daughters; Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah. [2] And they stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,”
[3] “Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of them that gathered themselves together against the Lord in the company of Korah; but died in his own sin, and had no sons. [4] Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father”.
[5] “And Moses brought their cause before the Lord. [6] And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, [7] The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father’s brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them. [8] And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter. [9] And if he have no daughter, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his brethren. [10] And if he have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his father’s brethren. [11] And if his father have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his kinsman that is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it: and it shall be unto the children of Israel a statute of judgment, as the Lord commanded Moses”.
4. Working in his vineyard at harvest time:
The Bible says a son who sleeps in the harvest time is a shame to his father.
5. Give him a befitting burial:
Sons must honour their fathers by mourning and giving them a befitting burial. You cannot bury your father anyhow. When John was beheaded, his disciples carried and buried his body. When the Lord Jesus gave up the ghost, his disciples buried him.
6. Supporting and helping him in his old age:
We should beware of abuse of older or aged persons. Sometimes it is difficult to deal with our aged parents, we must deal with them with love; visit them, spend time with them, and care for their needs.
Your father may not be influential, rich or perfect, but please, never ever mock at your father. You don’t understand what they have been through. For instance when I was born, my father was 53 years old. He had lived his life for 5 decades already, I should never attempt to correct or judge him. He may have failed in a certain sense, yet I am in no position to understand the full story.
Stay blessed, I love you!
