Genesis 16:4 (KJV) — “And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.”
Success has a subtle danger. The moment Hagar conceived, when her value seemed to increase, her attitude toward Sarai changed. What once humbled her now felt beneath her. Growth without gratitude can turn yesterday’s helpers into today’s targets.
This verse reminds us that finding sufficiency, relevance, or recognition must never lead to contempt for the relationships God used to shape us. Some people carried us before we could carry ourselves. Some environments stretched us before we flourished. God often uses imperfect people and difficult seasons as scaffolding for our destiny. When we despise them, we reveal pride, not progress.
Honour protects your future because dishonour poisons your testimony. Growth should deepen gratitude, not erase it.
Action:
Pause and reflect on the people, places, and relationships God used to build you. Choose honour over arrogance. Speak with gratitude, not resentment. Close chapters without burning bridges. Even when God moves you forward, let your heart remain humble and thankful.
