Exhortation
In this simple yet profound petition, Jesus teaches us to recognize the two fronts from which danger approaches. The first is the temptation that rises from within – the subtle pull of our own desires. James reminds us that “every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.”
This inward battle is real, and the heart can become a breeding place for thoughts or cravings that steer us away from God’s best.
When we pray, “Lead us not into temptation,” we are asking the Father to shepherd our hearts, to restrain the impulses that could mature into sin, and to strengthen our will to choose His way.
The second danger is the evil that comes from the evil one – the external attacks, schemes, and pressures designed to discourage, deceive, or destroy.
When we cry, “Deliver us from evil,” we acknowledge that spiritual warfare is real, but so is God’s protecting power. The Lord does not leave us defenseless; He stands as our Shield, our Deliverer, and our Strong Tower.
And the prayer closes with a declaration of confidence: “For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory.”
The One we call upon is sovereign over every temptation within and every assault without. His power is unmatched, His glory unchanging, and His kingdom everlasting. We are safe in His care.
