Learning to Meditate

I will be exhorting on the need to learn meditation.

Meditation comes from three Greek words: Hagah, Suach, and Meletaò. Together, these three explains the whole concept of Biblical mediation.

Hagah means to muse, to growl, to moan or to utter. This is usually used in the Psalms, Proverbs, Isaiah and in Joshuah 1:8.

[Joshua 1:8 KJV] “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success”.

Suach means to bow down, or despair of soul as used in Genesis 24:63 in the case of Isaac meditating at evening tide.

[Genesis 24:63 KJV] “And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.”

Meletaò means to care for, to study, to practice, or to rehearse as used in Acts 4:25 and in 1 Timothy 4:15.

[Acts 4:25 KJV] “Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?”

[1 Timothy 4:15 KJV] “Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all”.

To meditate therefore means to reflect on, to study, to utter out, to practice, to muse, or to think on. It is important to understand that biblical meditation is different from the Eastern understanding of meditation. Any form of meditation other than biblical meditation is demonic and devilish.

Now, the following are three simple steps to biblical meditation;

  1. To read, listen, watch and memorize, or to remember the word and works of God, His precepts and ways, statutes and commandment of the Lord.
  2. To think on or utter out or study or practice it until you can restate it either as a craft with verses, a song with verses, or a philosophical or witty rhyme or epigram.
  3. To talk about it to your soul or to others.

We understand that men like Isaac, Joshua, David, and Timothy practising meditation and had great results. Biblical meditation is an ancient secret to growth, profit, and prosperity. These great men meditated in the fields, on their beds, and in quiet places. They thought and reflected on the word, works, ways, and statutes of God. May the Lord help you to meditate always.

I love you!
