[1 Corinthians 14:18-19 KJV] “I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue’.
I want to exhort you about speaking in tongues. This is one thing that can change your life in a quicker and faster way.
It is important to understand first of all that praying in tongues is not the same as praying with your understanding.
There is a sharp contrast between praying in tongues and speaking with understanding. When a man prays in tongues, his understanding is unfruitful, but it takes a fruitful understanding to pray with your understanding. We can then concluded that to pray in tongues is to speak with a supernatural language.
God, therefore, wants us to pray both in tongues and with our understanding. We must engage in both.
When we pray in tongues, it helps us to do the following;
1. Speak mysteries to God.
Those who pray in tongues are able to speak mysteries to God. That is to say that when one prays in tongues, he even says things he has no knowledge of. He speaks mysteries and speaks of unknown things. Whenever we begin to pray in tongues, our understanding becomes unfruitful. We don’t understand what we are saying, and no one understands us. Praying in tongues is a mystery (See 1 Corinthians 14:1-3)
2. Build up the inner man:
1 Corinthians 14:4 teaches that “he that prays in an unknown tongue edifies himself”. He builds himself up! Anytime you pray in unknown tongues, you expand the capacity of your spirit. When you pray in tongues, it is your spirit man that prays and not your mind. As we engage the spirit man to pray, he grows.
3. Connect with divinity on the right protocols:
The Bible tells us in Romans 8:26 that we, mostly, do not know what and how to pray; but the Spirit helps our infirmities and prays or intercedes with groaning that cannot be uttered with words. The Bible says the Holy Spirit by our spirit prays in the right way, saying the right things, and with the right tone and fervency. Remember, “the effectual fervent prayer of the righteous avails much”.
4. Pray for long hours:
Praying in tongues helps you to pray for long hours because you don’t need to think about what you are saying. You just have to release your spirit for a free-fall. You just have to allow the Holy Spirit to take hold of your will and voice, and you just flow.
5. Find variety:
In 1 Corinthians 14:15, the apostle teaches that he will pray and sing in tongues; and pray and sing with the understanding. Praying in tongues brings diversity and variety to your prayer life.
6. Pray even when you are busy:
1 Corinthians 14:14 reveals that praying in tongues does not involve the mind or understanding. So, you can allow your spirit man to fellowship with God while you engage in other things. You can pray without ceasing when you pray in the unknown tongue.
7. Keep devils out of the discussion:
We know that the devil is not omniscient; praying in tongues, therefore, helps you to hold fruitful discussions with God without the devil knowing what you discussed. Praying in tongues encourages private discussions with God.
I pray that you will learn to pray more in tongues. Commit yourself to pray and keep the wheels of revival rolling. May the Almighty God make us stronger and stronger by the day. Stay blessed!
I love you.
