Revelation 4:6-7 KJV — “And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind. [7] And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.“
The scripture above is part of a vision of the presence of God seen by the Apostle John. John saw God, the twenty four elders and four living creatures. There were the semblance of the generations of great men. These are figurative symbols to depict the unseen reality of the spiritual.
The generation of great men has four faces: the face of a Lion, Man, Eagle, and an Ox. This represents the four dimensional attitude and disposition of a generation of great men should have.
Every great generation possess
- The courage is a lion
- The dominion of a man over other creatures.
- The vision of an eagle; the far seeing wisdom of the eagle.
- The strength of an Ox; irresistible power of the bull that brings the harvest.
The Bible teaches on the courageous man whose heart is like that of a lion (See 2 Samuel 17:10; Proverbs 28:1)
The Bible also talks about an eagle which flies upward, and has eyes that look far into the distance (See Job 39:27, 29). The eagle demonstrates foresight and vision.
It is important to understand that the Ox reflects irresistible power of the bull that yields an abundant harvest (See Proverbs 14:4)
Based on the scriptures, the lion’s face represents courageous justice; the eagle’s face demonstrates far-seeing wisdom; and the bull’s face communicates the irresistible power that brings in the harvest.
The face of a man (as in Ezekiel 10:14) refers to a quality that no animal possess but humans only, who are made in God’s image (See Gen. 1:27). That quality on earth is unique to humans. The face of a man demonstrates the dominion of man over other creatures. The face of a man demonstrates godly dominion. The generation of great men manifest godly nature. Their authority comes through manifesting godliness.
