Having been involved in the ministry of compassion for most of my life; the text above makes more sense to me than any other text in the Bible.
The truth is, when we help people or show compassion, it is very natural to expect that those people will love us. To whom much is forgiven, she loves much; compassion must birth love and appreciation but most of the time people change with their changing needs. When people are in dire need of something, there is a way they speak and when you get them out, there is a way they speak.
Sometimes, the simplest way to help without ever getting bitter is to cast your bread into a pool. This will help you not to know which fish ate your bread and make it easy to expect your rewards from God and not a man.
The preacher, therefore, encourages us to cast our abroad upon the water to save our hearts. You will escape the trap of bitterness when you throw your bread into the pool.
Conclusion
I will, therefore, exhort you to cast your bread upon the waters. In a general pool of water. You must save your heart. While you help people, you must not expect much back, because it will not be reciprocated. Just cast your bread upon the waters and expect to find it after many days.
