Proverbs 3:9-10 – “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.”
Has it ever occurred to you that God is not just interested in what we offer Him but also in how and why?
Let us explore the truth and revelation about the spiritual power of giving. Here are five (5) leading questions:
- Why do you think God emphasizes the attitude of the heart when we give?
- Giving Is Worship: The story of Cain and Abel in Genesis 4:3–5, teaches a great lesson. God is concerned not just with what we give, but how and why we give. In the realms of the spirit, offering is an act of heartfelt worship, not just a ritual.
- God Loves and Blesses Cheerful Givers: In 2 Corinthians 9:6–8, we understand that giving is sowing and the harvest is proportionate to what we sow. God blesses those who give cheerfully, not under compulsion.
- Offerings Reflect Our Faith and Trust: In Malachi 3:10, we learn that tithes and offerings are a faith declaration that God is our provider. That is why, God does not force any man to give Him an offering or tithes but He honours those who give!
- Giving Opens the Door for Overflow: Consider Luke 6:38 – “Give, and it will be given to you…” The principle of reciprocity in God’s kingdom — we receive as we release.
- Jesus Observes Our Giving: Mark 12:41–44 tells a story of the Lord watching as worshippers gave their offerings; and subsequently praising a widow’s offering. As we give, Jesus watches and sees the heart behind the offering. What is important is not about amount, but about sacrifice and devotion. What you give must cost you something!
- What does it mean to you personally to “honor the Lord with your substance”?
- Can you share a time when giving led to a breakthrough or unexpected blessing in your life?
- Why do you think Jesus praised the widow’s small offering over the large sums of the rich?
- How can we cultivate a spirit of generosity in our daily lives, beyond the church setting?
Prayer Focus
“Lord, help us to give not out of duty, but out of love and faith. Teach us to trust You with our resources and to honor You with our substance. We want to worship You through our giving. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
