To obey what God has commended you is better than every sacrifice you can bring Him.
[1 Samuel 15:22-23 KJV] “And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord ? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord , he hath also rejected thee from being king”.
Many of us are conversant with this dialogue above. It is a discussion between the prophet Samuel and King Saul. Many years ago, God, through His servant the prophet Samuel, sent King Saul on a mission to utterly destroy Amalek. They were to destroy both man and beast, but Saul left Agag the King of Amalek and the fat sheep and cows. Then in the night, the Lord sent Samuel to rebuke King Saul for his disobedience. That is where the dialogue was picked from.
King Saul was trying to defend himself that he had done what God asked him to do. There are many times when many of us lose great opportunities because we defend our stupidity and foolishness and rebellion. Saul was defending his disobedience and ego. He was justifying himself in rebellion; then Samuel said: “to obey is to sacrifice…”.
Four simple steps to total obedience are as follows;
1. Know who the highest authority is:
Your obedience and loyalty are to the highest authority. In all spheres of life, God is the highest authority and Supreme Being that must be obeyed. In the home, however, the husband is next in command; at your workplace, the supervisors and superiors must be obeyed. To obey is better than to sacrifice.
2. Be conversants with the will of the highest authority:
You will be able to obey when you know the will of the highest authority. You must know what must be done. You must know what he or she seeks and wants to be done. That is how you obey. If you don’t know the will of your lord, you cannot discern what must be done.
3. Be sure to hear the instructions clearly:
One simple way to carry out instructions is to seek clarification. Whenever you are given instruction, it is appropriate to seek clarification to ensure that you understand what is required of you.
4. Ask for any help you might need:
Ask for help if you need it. If there is any reason why you may not be able to obey, make your instructor aware of it, and ask for his or her help.
To obey is better than to sacrifice. It is therefore important to do everything to obey what has been said.
Be blessed; I love you!
