[1 Timothy 6:5-10 KJV] “Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. [6] But godliness with contentment is great gain. [7] For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. [8] And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. [9] But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. [10] For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows”.
The Bible tell us that godliness with content is great gain. This is because we brought nothing into the world and we shall take nothing out. We will leave everything behind when it is time to go.
What then does it mean? Should we do nothing? Should we just hang around and just allow time to pass without doing much? Of course not. I am writing this message to help you to understand what it means to earn a living.
There are five simple things that determine a living;
- What to eat
- What to wear
- Where to sleep
- Who to help and how to help them
- What to pursue
These are the five determinants of living. To earn a living is to earn enough to feed yourself, to cloth yourself, to provide descent sleeping place for yourself, to help and support others, and to pursue something.
[Deuteronomy 8:10-20 KJV] “When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the Lord thy God for the good land which he hath given thee. [11] Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day: [12] Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein ; [13] And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied; [14] Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the Lord thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage; [15] Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint; [16] Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end; [17] And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. [18] But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. [19] And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the Lord thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish. [20] As the nations which the Lord destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the Lord your God”.
Any teaching that contradicts this is from a reprobate mind that is destitute of the truth. Inasmuch as it is the will of God that we build good houses and live in them, our foremost preoccupation should be what to eat, then what to wear, then where to sleep. We should then be interested in helping someone else, and then we have to find and pursue something. God will help us in all this. There are some of us who have to pursue marrying, others should pursue building a house, and others should go for higher education.
My desire is that each of us would take life easy, and run with vision. May the Lord help you to rise to the occasion to make ends meet, and help you to earn a good living. Your life will not derail. You will meet your life’s goals as your love God, love one another, and disciple another.
So asking these five simple questions will help you to know what to do.
May you never be consumed. May the Lord sustain you and multiply your efforts. May God help you and keep you going. Be blessed.
I love you!
