12 Ways to Honour Your Mother

I understand that today is Mothers’ Day. A day to honour and worship with your mom and family. I want to seize this opportunity to exhort you on ways to honour your mom.

[Ephesians 6:2‭-‬3 KJV] “Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.”

Proverbs 15: 20 teaches that anyone who despises his or her mother is a fool. As a matter of fact, we must all honour our mothers and fathers because it is godly. It is a commandment from God, and not a cultural or social or tribal thing, it is a godly commandment. It is the first commandment with a promise of prosperity, long life and wellbeing.

Without doubt and ambiguity, not everyone has a child but everyone has a mother and we must try our best to honour them on this day and for the rest of our lives. That said, I should mention that honouring your mother is not always about giving her money or expensive gifts.

The following are 12 practical ways to honour your mother;

1. Absolve, forgive and pray for your mother:

No one has a perfect mother, if you don’t forgive and make excuses for your mother’s flaws and imperfections, you may be bitter against her and not be able to treat her with the needed respect and admiration. Your decision to forgive and pray for your mother is pleasing to God.

2. Tell your mother’s story with admiration and respect:

Learn to speak about your mother with admiration and respect. Cover her flaws and faults. Try to tell her story with admiration because she did her best with what life handed her. You may never understand her struggles and pain; just tell the best part of the story, she is your mother.

3. Except her wishes are contrary to Scriptures, obey your mother at all times:

It is important to seek the wisdom of your mother. Being your mother, she must know some things about you that you may not know yourself, by such deep knowledge  she could offer you many invaluable counsels

4. Care, support, and provide for your mother with tenderness and respect:

The Bible wants us to care and provide for our mothers. We must never abuse them. We must treat them with tenderness and care. Many don’t know this, but your mother is your responsibility.

5. Serve your mother:

Find time to visit and do the laundry, run errands, and do the grocery for her. Let us learn to serve our moms, especially when they are old or frail.

6. Advance her legacy:

Build a memorial around the virtues she instilled in you. For instance, she may have taught you how to cook, how and what to believe, or how to plan, let everyone know that she taught you these things. Again, talk about your mother with respect and admiration. You don’t need to fake it; just look for the good she did and advance that legacy.

7. Celebrate your mother:

Always remember to celebrate her birthdays and anniversaries. Observe the festivities taught you to observe.

8. Invite her to your special occasions:

Often, this is an honour she looks forward to. Invite your mother to your graduation, ordination, parties, baby showers, etc.

9. Visit her with her grandchildren;

When the Lord bless you with children, visit your mother with them. It honours her. And if you’re yet to have children, may the Lord bless you with children, Amen!

10. Create treasured memories with her:

You can create memorable traditions and occasions around your mother her, this is a really great honour to her. For instance, you could organise a yearly photoshoot with her. This also serves as a great memory.

11. Invite your pastor to worship and pray with your mother:

It is an honour to introduce your mother to Christ or to help strengthen her faith.

12. Cook and eat your mothers favourite meals with her:

There is power in eating together. Remember how Jacob received the blessing because he often cooked Isaac’s favourite meals and served it to him. Incidentally,  Jacob was very close to his mother’s kitchen.

Listen! You will never regret the decision to honour your mother. Be blessed as you honour her!

I love you!
