“For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church“ (Ephesians 5:31-31 KJV).
Marriage, a covenant relationship between two adults of the opposite sex, is a great mystery. It signifies the great union between Christ and the church.
Marriage is for keeps, for a life time, and for our good. However, many people have been destroyed and a lot more are enduring marriage than enjoying it. Is it possible to enjoy a hitch free marriage in this volatile generation with abounding iniquity? Sure! It is, but how?
In drawing lessons from the life of Isaac and Rebecca, we can understand that;
1. Hitch free marriages work for sons and daughters:
Both Isaac and Rebecca were raised in homes. Marriage often doesn’t work for people from dysfunctional homes. Except they allow themselves to be reprogrammed by the Word of God. We often replay the things we have witnessed at home, in our own marriages. Most men who beat their wives, have had wife beaters as an example at some point in their lives. Remember Isaac was raised by Abraham, commanding him after God. Abraham demanded that a wife be found for his son from a region where daughters were raised and not just fed.
2. Work on yourself:
Marriage works for people who take time to work on themselves. It works well for people who are not just looking for right suitors and right attitudes in people, but for those who are themselves striving to be better people. Every one of us must spend time everyday day of our lives building character, capacity, and choices. When we all consistently ask the right questions and work on developing ourselves, we tend to enjoy our relationships better. Marriage work when we are not just focused on finding the best partners, but when we focus on offering ourselves as their best partners.
3. Meet the right suitor:
It takes two to tango. Isaac married Rebecca, not Jezebel. The company you keep impacts your destiny and experience. A friend of fools shall be destroyed (See 1 Corinthians 15:33). The foundation to a hitch free marriage is finding the right suitor. You must establish your standards and criteria. Look out for complementing capacity in the other person. If Isaac had married a Jezebel or a Canaanite the story would have been different. Our great example is Abigail; she married Nabal, a fool, and then she married David, the wise and god-fearing king. We see that she is the same woman but different marriage quality. Choose your partners well.
4. Ask questions:
The right questions lead to right answers.
5. Get a covenant:
refuse to cohabit. Concubines are never treated right. The difference between knocking and entering is only one step. You are just a signature away from a hitch free marriage. The covenant makes the union sacred. Our Lord Jesus gave the church the Cup of Communion as a seal of His covenant with us. The New Covenant is signed with His blood, His own blood.
6. Work on it:
Marriages work better when couples work at it together daily. It begins with having Quiet Time together. Husbands, wash her with the Word. Wives, complement his weaknesses. Communicate and meet each others needs.
Dear Lord, thank you for your plan to give me a hitch free marriage. Please help me to have the right mindset concerning marriage, and give me the diligence to work on me; to improve myself for this lifetime covenant, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
