There Bible tells us that the spirit of a man shall sustain him in his infirmity; but a wounded or crushed spirit, nobody can bear. There is nothing as painful as a crushed spirit or a sick heart or a sorrowful soul.

The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear? (Proverbs 18:14 KJV)

I will not pretend to know the causes of depression or feeling blue but we can all be affected.
Jesus was affected; The Lord felt depressed, His soul was sorrowful unto death. His soul was so sorrowful until he felt like giving up life. For the first time the Lord asked for prayer support.
Mark 14:34 shows that Jesus could perceive an imminent danger, He had a spiritual knowing of looming clouds of darkness; or just an intuitive feeling that something is wrong. This feeling can make a person feel despaired or depressed.
Apostle Paul felt depressed. He even despaired of life at a point. He was discouraged. 2 Corinthians 1:8 reveals that circumstances and things happening around us can also make us feel blue, despaired, or even depressed.
The servant after God’s own heart, King David, also suffered depression and even panic attacks.
The list is endless, Jonah, Judas Iscariot etc.
Proverbs 13:12 reveals that hope deferred makes the heart sick; but a dream come true is a tree of life.
This should inform us that the source of feeling blue or depressed can be in the spirit of a man, the body of the man or even the soul of a man.
I believe that the devastating effects of depression can be mitigated. We can live such that none of us will be crushed. To have a crushed spirit is too painful, avoid it.
Simple tips to cultivating a healthy spirit, soul, and body include:
- Be moderate in all things (Philippians 4:5)
- Be anxious for nothing: Trust God, in all things good or bad, put your faith in God, make Him your source. In all things with prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known unto God (Philippians 4:6)
- Challenge your thoughts with the Word of God (Philippians 4:8-9)
- Stay connected with supportive people. Woe is he that is alone when he falls. Stay connected on social media, phone, small groups etc
- Do things that make you feel good about yourself
- Rest: Get 8 hours of sleep nightly
- Exercise: get 30 mins of daily exercise; walking, jogging, skipping etc
- Eat healthily: don’t skip meals, cut sugars, cut refined carbs, boost Vitamins B, boost Omega essentials (oily fish)
- Step out into nature every 2 hours
- Get professional help when you feel overwhelmed.
God bless you!
