(2 Chronicles 18:19-23 KJV) “And the Lord said, Who shall entice Ahab king of Israel, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth–gilead? And one spake saying after this manner, and another saying after that manner. (20) Then there came out a spirit, and stood before the Lord , and said, I will entice him. And the Lord said unto him, Wherewith?
(21) And he said, I will go out, and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And the Lord said, Thou shalt entice him, and thou shalt also prevail: go out, and do even so. (22) Now therefore, behold, the Lord hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of these thy prophets, and the Lord hath spoken evil against thee. (23) Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near, and smote Micaiah upon the cheek, and said, Which way went the Spirit of the Lord from me to speak unto thee?”
There are so many voices in the world and each has signification. Every one of these voices is speaking. Very often, prophets come and speak to us; but the fact that a prophet spoke, does not mean the Holy Spirit is speaking.
A prophet may speak by a spirit from the presence of the Lord but it will not be the Holy Spirit. We read how a lying spirit came from the presence of the Lord to deceive Ahab.
I, therefore, encourage you to test every spirit and be sure that what you are hearing is the word of God.
So how do you know whether what you are hearing is the voice and word of the Holy Spirit? This is so important because you should not be misled. You must be able to recognise the voice of the Holy Spirit. The truth is that many of the prophets and prophetesses are speaking by a familiar or lying spirit. How then do you discern the voice speaking to you;
The word you hear must accord with godliness:
The Bible teaches us that if any man teaches things that do not follow doctrine which is according to godliness, that man is proud, ignorant, and confused.
“If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.” (1 Timothy 6:3-5 KJV). The Holy Spirit will, therefore, teach things which is according to godliness.
It must glorify Christ Jesus:
Read John 16:13-14, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.” The Holy Spirit will always glorify Christ Jesus.
Every message from the Holy Spirit must agree with the word of God:
The Spirit of God does not speak of His own will, what He receives from Christ is what He speaks, so any word purported to have come from the Holy Spirit which does not agree with the word of God is from another spirit and not the Holy Spirit.
Every word of God is a seed and must bear the fruit of the spirit:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-24 KJV)
As you go about your business today, my prayer for you is that your ears be opened to the voice of the Holy Spirit and that the Lord would give you a discerning ear to be able to recognise what He is saying and what the enemy is also saying, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
