I want to speak to you today about the revival we need. The Revival we need is a revival of prayer, reading, doctrine, and exhortation. These are the things that will restore back to the church and society the sanity and life we seek.
[Revelation 3:2 KJV] “Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God”.
How people live is determined by what they hear and learn. That is why the apostle said, “till I come give attendance to reading, exhortation and doctrine”.
[1 Timothy 4:13-16 KJV] “Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee”.
Many of us miss our way because of what we don’t know or what we overlook.
It is important to understand that one thing that is constant in life is degeneration. If we don’t constantly contend for the faith and refresh our spirits with deeper and clearer truth, we will soon move out of the way.
We learn in science that everything is constantly seeking to move into a state of chaos. We must, therefore, strive constantly to keep things under control. Until you constantly strive to get better, you will get worse. We must, therefore, understand that we need a revival from time to time.
Most often, when you build a house on the street, you may be the best and first house, but because the house gets older through wear and tear; and because of technological advancement; with time, your house becomes the first house and not necessarily the best house. You must be striving daily to get better.
I believe with all my heart that it is time to experience a revival and restoration. You shall be restored and revived with grace and unction to function. You shall receive wisdom and power to bring back to life the things that are weak and dying.
What does it mean to revive something?
To revive a thing or person is to strengthen and bring back to life things that used to be strong and alive, but are now weakened and dying. The Lord Jesus Christ told the early church to strengthen the things that remain, that are ready to die. There are times when things that used to be alive begin to die. They grow weak and begin to die, sometimes, through our negligence and indifference. A revival is, therefore, an awakening that stirs up our memory and gingers us to work on good things that are dying because of neglect.
Why do we need a revival from time?
We need the awakening from time to time because we tend to forget who we are and what things brought us this far; many of the times, we tend to play down on the cardinal things that bought us far.
1. We simply forget where we were and used to do:
Often, we lose our first love and passion because we forget. We are forgetful hearers, many of us do not even practice the word of God that we hear. Things simply slip out of our hands and we lose them.
2. We get deceived by the names people call us:
To one of the early churches, Jesus said: “you have a name that you are alive but are dead”. Many are fooled by what people think and not who we are. Sometimes, we walk in the ego of the image we have formed in the eyes of people. We need the awakening of the Spirit and the pushing of the word.
3. We are fooled by comparing ourselves to others:
Read the gospels about a Pharisee and Publican who went to pray. The publican went home justified because he was true to himself and sought for mercy. The Pharisee went back still guilty because he compared himself with others. You might feel good if you compare yourself with others, but our standard must be Christ not others.
How do I know that I need a revival?
You must know you need a revival the very moment you feel frigid and enstranged. You need a revival whenever you don’t feel, the love, the presence, the righteousness, the peace, and the joy in the Holy Ghost.
- You know you need a revival when you feel dry and feel far away from the bridegroom.
- You need a revival when you feel cold and distanced: When you have lost your love and passion, you need a revival.
- You need a revival when you have lost our righteousness: The Bible exhorts us to be holy as He is holy. The kingdom is righteousness. You must not lose your righteousness.
- You need a revival when you have lost your peace: The kingdom is peace.
- You need a revival when you have lost your joy in the Holy Ghost
How you get a revival?
You get a revival through a season of prayer and waiting and fasting and worshipping.
[Acts 13:1-3 KJV] “Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away”.
A revival always begins with a season of waiting and praying and fasting and worshipping. We must always take advantage of these seasons and programs in church to revive our spirits. As a church, we must be up and doing in seeking hungrily after God. This is the season to awaken the church and begin to seek God for greater grace, anointing, and power.
We need a revival to seek and strengthen the things that are left and are ready to die. We need a revival of holiness, a revival of zeal, a revival of reading, a revival of honesty, a revival of reverence. I pray that the Lord will send a revival. I pray that He will send a word to awaken us in the name of Jesus.
