Psalm 34:11-16 KJV — Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD. [12] What man is he that desireth life, And loveth many days, that he may see good? [13] Keep thy tongue from evil, And thy lips from speaking guile.
[14] Depart from evil, and do good; Seek peace, and pursue it. [15] The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, And his ears are open unto their cry. [16] The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, To cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
The story of the birth of Christ, especially the birth of His forerunner John the Baptist teaches us great lessons for living. The Bible tells us that an angel appeared to Zachariah while he served in the temple at the time of prayer. Zachariah is the father of John the Baptist and the husband of Elizabeth, Mary’s cousin. Now, when the angel appeared and broke the news to him that Elizabeth shall conceive a child, he doubted and questioned the angel. At this point the angel had to shut his mouth until John was born.
Why would the angel of the Lord make Zachariah dumb for 9 months? This is because words are seeds; they are forerunners into your future. Words you sow through loose talk, confession, speaking can make or unmake you.
In the Psalm above, the psalmist teaches us the secret to many days and good times. He teaches that if you love to see many good days, then:
- Keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from speaking guile.
- Depart from evil and do good.
- Seek peace and pursue it.
This is because the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous and His ears are open to their prayers. I pray that you will receive the strength and the grace to fear God and see many good days. I pray that you will keep your tongue and mouth from speaking neither evil nor guile. May your tongue become wholesome and a tree of life! May you never lack the grace to depart from evil and do good!
