Psalm 46:1-11 KJV — God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. [2] Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; [3] Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
[4] There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, The holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. [5] God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. [6] The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: He uttered his voice, the earth melted.
[7] The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. [8] Come, behold the works of the LORD, What desolations he hath made in the earth. [9] He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; He breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; He burneth the chariot in the fire.
[10] Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. [11] The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
Life often confronts us with storms we never expected; with trials, fears, and challenges that threaten to overwhelm us. In those moments, it is easy to feel helpless and alone. But Psalm 46 reminds us that no matter how fierce the storm, God remains unshaken. He is not only above the chaos; He is with us in the midst of it. This truth should fill our hearts with hope, courage, and peace even in life’s darkest valleys.
To make God our refuge means to trust Him as our safe shelter from danger. He is the One we can run to when life presses hard. To make Him our strength means leaning on His power instead of our own weakness. And to know Him as our very present help means experiencing His nearness in every circumstance, He is not far away or delayed, but right here, right now, actively working for our good.
We need God as our refuge and strength because the world is unpredictable, and our own strength is limited. Money, friends, or human wisdom cannot always deliver us in times of trouble, but God never fails. He is unchanging, all-powerful, and faithful. By making Him our refuge, we find peace that no storm can shake. By leaning on His strength, we rise above our fears. By trusting in His present help, we are never abandoned or forsaken.
We make God our refuge by running to Him first in prayer whenever trouble arises. We make Him our strength by surrendering our weakness to Him daily, depending on His Spirit to empower us. We experience Him as our present help by walking closely with Him—studying His Word, obeying His voice, and trusting His promises even when circumstances seem contrary. The more we draw near to Him, the more we discover His power and presence at work in our lives.
Today, choose to stop relying solely on yourself or on temporary solutions. Instead, declare with faith: “God is my refuge, my strength, and my very present help in trouble.” Run into His arms in prayer, rest in His strength, and live in the confidence that you are never alone. Whatever storm you face, remember that God is with you, and with Him, you will not be moved.
Amen
