1 Peter 5:8-9 KJV — “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.”
The Christian life is not a playground, it is a battlefield. Peter reminds us that we have an adversary: the devil. He is not a myth, nor is he passive. Like a roaring lion, he is on the move, searching for lives to destroy, faith to weaken, and destinies to derail. His roar is meant to instill fear, to make us doubt God’s promises and compromise our faith. But the good news is this: he is not the Lion of Judah. His roar may sound threatening, but his power is limited, and his defeat is already sealed at the cross.
Peter gives us two keys for dealing with the adversary: vigilance and steadfast faith. To be sober means to live with a clear mind, not distracted or dulled by sin, fear, or worldly pursuits. To be vigilant means to stay alert, discerning the enemy’s schemes before they take root. We do not overcome by fear or retreat, but by standing firm in the faith, anchored in God’s Word, covered in prayer, and strengthened in fellowship with other believers.
You are not alone in this fight. The same afflictions and trials you face are shared by believers around the world. The enemy may try to isolate you and make you feel like your struggle is unique, but God’s people everywhere are overcoming by the same grace. Take courage: the Lion of Judah lives in you, and greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.
Today, choose to be spiritually alert. Guard your heart, resist the enemy with God’s Word, and stand firm in faith. Do not run from the roar—stand on the victory Christ has already given you.
