Cursing the fig tree

Scripture:

Gospel of Mark 11:12–14, 20–26 (KJV)

Brief Introduction

In this passage, Jesus approaches a fig tree full of leaves but finds no fruit. He speaks to it, and by the next day it has withered from the roots. When the disciples marvel, Jesus shifts the lesson to faith, prayer, and forgiveness.

The fig tree represents outward appearance without inward productivity. It looked alive, promising, and fruitful, but it was empty. Jesus uses this moment to teach that real spiritual power flows from authentic faith, believing prayer, and a forgiving heart.

This discussion challenges us to examine three things:

  1. Are we truly fruitful or just outwardly impressive?
  2. Do we pray with believing faith?
  3. Are we harboring unforgiveness that blocks our spiritual authority?

Leading Discussion Questions

  1. What does the fig tree symbolize in this passage?
  2. Why would Jesus respond so strongly to a fruitless tree?
  3. What does “having leaves but no fruit” look like in a believer’s life today?
  4. What does it mean that the tree dried up “from the roots”?
  5. Can spiritual decline begin internally before it is visible externally?
  6. How can we strengthen our spiritual roots?
  7. Why did Jesus respond to the miracle by saying, “Have faith in God”?
  8. What kind of faith is He describing?
  9. What does it mean to speak to a mountain without doubting?
  10. What is the connection between believing and receiving in prayer?
  11. How do doubt and fear affect our prayers?
  12. Have you experienced answered prayer through persistent faith?
  13. Why does Jesus connect forgiveness with effective prayer?
  14. How can unforgiveness hinder spiritual growth?
  15. Is there anyone you need to forgive to free your heart?
  16. What practical step can you take this week to become more spiritually fruitful?

Closing Prayer

Father in Heaven, We thank You for Your Word that searches our hearts.

Remove every form of empty religion from our lives. Help us to bear genuine spiritual fruit. Increase our faith so we can pray boldly and believe confident you.

Remove every mountain standing before us. Search our hearts and reveal any unforgiveness. Give us grace to forgive as You have forgiven us. May our lives not just look fruitful. May we truly produce fruit that glorifies You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
