For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. (1 John 3:20-21 KJV)

The impact of sin on those who have believed in Jesus Christ is far higher than those who don’t. This is explained by the simple truth that by our faith in Christ, our conscience has been regenerated by the sprinkling of the blood. Our regenerated conscience therefore becomes like a fuse or thermostat that sends an alarm to our spirit man when evil is attacking. The fuse of conscience breaks and the alarm goes off, to draw our attention to the truth that evil is attacking. The conscience is God circuit breaker wired into us to sound an alarm when we are touching sin. It is not meant to condemn us but to convict us. (See John 8:9)
This is exactly what happened to Adam and Eve when they disobeyed God. Their lively conscience began to convict them. So when they heard the voice of God walking in the garden, they went into hiding. God had come into the garden to fellowship with them but their first reaction was to go into hiding. They went to hide in the midst of the trees. (Genesis 3)
Feeling guilty when you sin is a sign of a healthy conscience. You should rather feel sorry and afraid when your conscience does not condemn you when you sin. The problem however is how we respond to this alarm of the conscience.
The Bible tells us that instead of building strongholds of excuses and hiding in them, we should rather come out and run boldly to the throne of mercy to receive grace to help. Because we have a high priest who understands our weaknesses. (Hebrews 4)
Let us learn from David and return when we fail. He that is born of God does not continue in sin. Let us return and find grace to help. Oh yes! You have failed but you can return and find grace to help. God is on His Mercy Seat, waiting to forgive and restore. O God! Have mercy on us. Forgive and heal the broken bones (Psalm 51)
Amen!
