[Romans 6:23 KJV] “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”.
The Bible tells us that we have all sinned and come short of the glory. Though each of was formed perfectly in the image and likeness of God, we became deformed by sin. But in the fullness of time God has sent His Son to reform and transform every one of us; as long as we are willing to believe and repent and continue in the Lord. In the fullness of time, God, who so loves the world, gave His Son to us that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
This eternal life is a free gift from God through Jesus Christ to those who believe; it is a free gift and no man can earn it. Many who tried to earn it, lost it; they missed it; because it would cost you everything, including your very life! That is why God gave His Son to die in our place that we might live forever.
Whenever the Lord was asked what a man may do to inherit eternal life? The answer was always the same; to keep the commandments. Even those who claim to have kept the law were still exhorted to give all that they had to the poor.
[Luke 18:18-22 KJV] “And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? [19] And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God. [20] Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother. [21] And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up. [22] Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me”.
And those who asked the same question just to tempt the Lord were given the same answer; keep the law!
[Luke 10:25-28 KJV] “And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? [26] He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? [27] And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. [28] And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live].
We can then conclude that eternal life is a free gift from God through Jesus Christ. All you have to do is to believe, repent, and continue in that faith.
