Zechariah 4:8–10 (KJV) — “Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you.”
“For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.”
You don’t have to be great to start, but you must start to be great.
When God gave Zerubbabel the task of rebuilding the temple, it began with small, unimpressive beginnings. The foundation didn’t look like much compared to the glory of Solomon’s temple, and some people mocked the progress.
Yet, God reminded His people not to despise the day of small beginnings. What mattered wasn’t how big the start looked—it was the divine assurance that what God starts, He finishes.
Every great work begins with a single step of faith. Too often, people wait for perfect conditions before they start pursuing what God has placed in their hearts.
But greatness grows out of obedience, persistence, and trust in God’s timing. The same hands that laid the foundation will also complete the work. When God is with you, small beginnings can lead to mighty endings.
Don’t despise your humble start, your limited resources, or your quiet season. God’s eyes are upon your work. He sees your faith, your effort, and your patience. Keep building, keep believing, the same God who began the good work in you will bring it to completion.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for reminding me that every great thing begins small. Help me to value my beginnings and trust that You are working through them.
Give me the courage to start, the faith to continue, and the strength to finish. I believe that what You have started in my life, You will surely complete. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
