Praying in tongues is praying in the spirit; it is praying in a heavenly language that cannot be understood by any man, not even the speaker, except their hearing is equally empowered by the same Holy Ghost.
[1 Corinthians 14:1-5, 13-14 KJV] “Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.”
“But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.”
“I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.”
“Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.“
Even on the Day of Pentecost, the devout men heard them speak; the Bible didn’t say they spoke in their language. The people gather heard (decoded) the language by the Holy Spirit. He empowered their hearing to understand what they said. It’s just like listening to a speech through a translator. They heard them, the scriptures never said, they spoke their language.
[Acts 2:1-6 KJV] “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.”
“And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
“And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.“
In fact, anyone who is baptised in the Holy Ghost and is willing to speak can speak in tongues. The spirit of the prophet is subject to the prophet. The prophet makes the choice.

3. When you pray in tongues or the spirit, you are praying beyond the boundaries and limitations of language and words
“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” [Romans 8:26-27 KJV]
When you pray in tongues, you are praying the will and the mind of God.
“But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God”. [1 Corinthians 2:10-11 KJV]
