Old oil, however powerful it once was, eventually needs replenishing. David did not ask merely to remember a past anointing; he declared confidently that he would be anointed with fresh oil, a continual renewing of divine enablement. Whatever anointing has carried you this far, this month is an invitation to receive fresh oil, poured afresh for the assignments ahead.
The anointing that opened yesterday’s doors is not automatically sufficient for tomorrow’s battles. This is why David’s declaration is so important; he did not rest on past experiences of God’s power; he expected continual, fresh anointing as part of a flourishing life.
Just as physical oil is used up and must be replenished, spiritual anointing can grow stale when we lean only on old encounters rather than pursuing fresh ones.
This month, do not settle for yesterday’s grace to carry today’s challenges. Pray earnestly for fresh anointing, fresh grace to preach, fresh grace to lead your home, fresh grace to excel at your work, fresh grace to endure what once seemed unbearable.
Fresh oil often comes through fresh consecration: renewed prayer, renewed fasting, renewed hunger for the Word, and renewed sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s voice. Examine your spiritual life honestly. Has service become routine? Has worship become mechanical? These are signs that the oil may be running low.
Return to the place of intimate fellowship with God, and ask specifically for fresh oil to be poured over your head, your hands, your voice, and your vision. As with David, when fresh oil comes, strength returns, confidence returns, and your horn, a symbol of strength and authority, is exalted once again.
Prayer
- Father, anoint me afresh with the oil of Your Spirit for the assignments ahead.
- Lord, renew my hunger, my prayer life, and my sensitivity to Your voice.
- In the name of Jesus, let fresh grace flow through every area where the old oil has run dry.
